Davis Station

Davis the most southerly Australian Antarctic station is situated at 68deg 35' south 77deg 58' east on the ingrid Christensen coast of Princess Elizabeth Land .

Davis is on the edge of 400 km² area of rocky hills and lakes called the Vest Fold Hills .

The value of the station to science is devided from several factors including the role of Davis as  a staging base for scientific activity else where in the region {including the Larsemann Hills ,the Prince Charles Mountain , the Amery Ice Shelf and the Polar Ice in general }.

During the summer season Davis station is very active .

Warmest month January  has an averege temperature of  1 degree, while winter temperatures are usually below -20.

Strong winds and blizzards are uncommon there .

General Geology

The East Antarctic Shield is an ancient Precambrian craton or continental shield which once formed a central part of the Gondwanan super continent .Despite only limited and intermittent outcrop , the current  general consensus is that the East Antartic Shield comprises a number of discrete Archaean terranes separated by a proterozoic mobile belt

Whithin the Australian Antartic Territory , Archaean terranse of the East Antartic Shield area represented by the Vestfold Hills of Princess Elizabeth Land , the Napier Complex of Enderby Land and the southern Prince Charles Mountains of Macrobertson Land . Out crops of the intervening proterozoic mobile belt have been recognised whitin the Rayner Complex of Enderby andKemp Lands ,the stillwell hills of kemp land ,the Mawson coastline of Kemp and Macrobertson land, the Ingrid Christensen coastline of Prydz Bay , Princess Elizabeth Land ,and the northren Prince Chales Mountains of MacRobertson Land .

Exposures of the Proterozoic mobile belt comprise reworked Archaean rocks as well as rocks of Middle to Late Proterozoic origin .Basement lithology´s of both the Archaean terranes and the Proterozoic mobile belt were variably subjected to amphibolite to granulite facies metamorphism ,intense deformation , and granitoid intrusion  at 1000 ma Secod pervasive thermal event in the Early Cambrian , the so-called 500ma or Pan –African event , with little or no evidence of an earlier 1000ma event. Evidence of subsequent geological events , including the localised deposition of Permo-Triassic sedimentary sequences and the intrusion of Mesozoic and Cenozoic dykes , stocks and sills , is well documented within the Prince Charles Mountains .

Our samples:

Davis station is related to Archaean terranes (geological time scale) of East shield Antarctica .

Its age is about 3000 ma. Vestfold Hills area have various gneisses' witch have sedementary and ignoeous source .

This gneisses is containing (Paragneisses and Ortho gneisses ), such as Taynaya and Chelnok Paragneisses ,Tryne Mafic Gneiss and mossel Falsic Gneiss .

Our sampels consist of : Orth gneisses witch their Protholits have been Felsic rocks and they have origanated in the basis minerals are : quartz, feldespar and biotite and our samples have been altered in doitric stage .

The complete conclusion of our investigation uder title mineralogy and petrography of davis station 'granite gneiss'will be deliver as an essay.
